Overview of GPS
GPS (Global Positioning System) is a worldwide radio navigation system, developed and funded by the United States
Department of Defense and operated by the U.S. military. As said already GPS freight tracking systems also use this
technology.
There are 24 solar powered GPS satellites orbiting 11,000 nautical miles above the earth. GPS orbits are arranged so that
at any time, from any point on earth, there are at least four satellites visible in the sky.
These satellites transmit radio signals to ground station receivers or to installed devices that contain receivers, which
then calculate the position of the vehicle to within 10-20 feet!
Although developed for use by the military for naviagation, GPS has become an integral asset in various civilian
applications, including personal use - for recreational purposes and on automobiles, as well as used as a GPS freight
tracking system for freight companies, commerical vehicle fleet tracking and more.
